Picking the Perfect Diaper Bag

Taking your baby out for the day will require patience and a great diaper bag. Both are necessary when leaving your house with a newborn, but a diaper bag is worth its weight in gold when you are out with your baby.

Finding the right diaper bag for you can be a daunting task. You want a bag that matches your personality, but you also want one that has enough space to carry everything you need to keep your baby comfortable. What features should you look for in a diaper bag?

While the final say on what you need is yours, there are some of features I have found to be important in a useable diaper bag. They are listed in order of importance.

Changing PadA built-in changing pad is a must for any diaper bag. Many new mothers suffer from forgetfulness having so many new things to keep track of. With my first child I lost two unattached changing pads simply because I forgot to put them back into the bag after changing my son.

Liquids Pouch Having a plastic pouch to hold lotions, rash creams, and baby oil separate from the main compartment will help keep your other supplies safe should a bottle leak. This can be either attached to the bag or removable. A removable one is the easiest to clean should a leak happen, but an attached compartment will not get left behind after a changing.

RoomThe bag you choose should have enough room to carry diapers, wipes, burp rags, bibs, bottles, formula, snacks, a change of clothing, entertainment for baby and you, and any other miscellaneous items you might need while out. A perfect diaper bag would have pockets for holding items both inside the main compartment and along the outside of the bag. Organization of your bag is crucial for knowing when you are out of something. You do not need to find this out while you are out with your baby.

Mommy SpaceSome diaper bags now have a section that doubles as a purse for mommy. With places for credit cards, money, and cell phones, you can leave the house with one bag instead of two bags. But keep in mind safety before you do this route. You will need to keep a closer eye on your diaper bag if your identification and money are inside. It might be easier and safer to use a fanny pack for your valuables.

LookHow your diaper bag looks will depend completely on your personality. Are you the kind of person who always buys designer items or are do you lean more toward the cute baby gear? Always keep your likes in mind when purchasing your bag, so you will want to use it every time you go out with baby.

A diaper bag is a crucial piece of baby gear and the one item you will probably use everyday. Choosing the right one will be the best purchase you will make for your new baby.
